A Study of Time Markers in the Central Thai Dialect

Abstract
This article aims at studying time markers in the Central Thai dialect to determine the characteristics of the markers and the aspects of culture, tradition, and worldview reflected in these markers. Data are collected from several books, Thai dictionaries and from interviews of Central Thai informants. The findings reveal that time markers in the Central Thai dialect can be categorized into three groups, namely markers of time spot of a day, markers for date, month, and year, and markers designating length of time. Besides, these time markers reflect the culture and tradition of Central Thai society in terms of occupation and ways of life, daily activities of the Buddhist monks, local sports and folk performances. Moreover, it is relevant to the worldview of the Central Thai people where time is closely related to environment, people, and animals. Time is conceptualizes in terms of past, present and future. Time within a day can be segmented. Time during the day and during the night is significantly different and finally, time is circulated endlessly.
