Language Strategies in Wedding Blessings

Abstract
This research aimed to study linguistic devices used in wedding blessings. The scope of this study was limited only to the wedding celebration of the city people, based on the setting in Bangkok. The data were collected from 10 video clips published on www.youtube.com from 2013 to 2018. Five linguistic devices used in wedding blessings, namely lexical choices, claiming, presupposition, metaphor and rhetorical question were obtained. These linguistic devices conveyed the four sets of wedding blessing’s meanings: a) good qualities of the couple guaranteeing a good marriage life; b) advice on marriage life provided by the guest of honor; c) the guest of honor considered an important person who is a representative to bless the wedding couple and d) having a good marriage life with a good spouse, love, warmth and sustainability. Whether the guest of honor either used or did not use any linguistic devices or used repeated words, synonyms or metaphor, it reflected the ideas, belief, culture and way of life of people in society.
