A Study of Word Categories and Meanings of the Word /naj/ in the Sukhothai Period

Abstract
The purpose of this article is to analyze the word categories and the grammatical meanings of the word /naj/ in the Sukhothai period. The data were collected from the 37 inscriptions in the Sukhothai period.
It is found that the word /naj/ in the Sukhothai period has two word categories, namely preposition and noun phrase connector and has nine grammatical meanings. All of the nine meanings share the underlying conceptual meaning; that is to say, ‘INSIDENESS’. The only one meaning that can occur both in the preposition and noun phrase connector is “spatial relationship”. However, there are seven meanings that occur in the preposition position only. These include the meanings referring to the following: “temporal relation”, “social relation”, “textual relation”, “inter-personal relation”, “quantitative relation”, “cognitive relation”, and “topical relation”. In addition, there is one meaning that occurs in the noun phrase connector position only, namely the meaning referring to “possessive relation”.
