การนำเสนอภาพความเป็นแม่ในหนังสือเด็กในประเทศไทย

This article aims to explain the portrayal of motherhood in children’s book in Thailand, revealing whether these children’s books either reflect or construct social reality toward motherhood. Twelve children’s books both award winning book from Office of the Basic Education Commission and any other children’s books selling at bookstore have been selected for this study. All these children’s books have been categorized into two groups which are books for boys and books for girls. The results show that characters are both humans and animals. Animal characters which are presented as male are definitely stronger than female. Moreover, mothers’ main role is to take care and to nurture children. Regarding settings, mothers are mostly presented in a domestic scene; therefore, their activities relate to domestic chore and taking care of all members in the household. Furthermore, emotional expressions and characteristics of mothers conform with femininity traits. In sum, the representation of motherhood presented in these children’s books is the construction of motherhood according to social expectations and reflects gender oppression that still retains in the society.
