Abstract

                  The research project A Sythesis of Research Utilisation with Communication Tools (RUC) syntheises knowledge from 12 one-year research materials conducted in various Thailand’s regions. These research materials involve three main issues: a development of disadvantaged social groups, a development of agriculture, and a resource management. Drawing upon the selected research materials, the RUC project aims to investigate research utilisation with communication tools, interrogating (1) how to perform knowledge delivery to users appropriately, (2) how to generate opinion leaders for knowledge distribution, and (3) how to communicate research findings to empower society as a whole.
                   The RUC project uses three theoretical concepts: (1) a concept of communication for research utilisation, (2) a concept of participatory action research (PAR) and a stakeholder analysis, and (3) an alternative development communication paradigm. Adopting a grounded theory approach, this project draws on documentary data of 12 research materials, a group meeting, a fieldstudy, a depth interview, etc. The result of the knowledge synthesis concerns 4 dimensions: research utilisation tools, innovations of research utilisation, communication innovations, and new knowledge findings.
                   Finally, the RUC project reveals that in order to do research utilisation in various spaces and communities, communication studies scholars need to elaborate on the three theoretical concepts mentioned above. As a pilot study of research utilisation, the RUC project will be useful for those who are interested in knowledge distribution of previous research materials as well as in a new alternative paradigm of development communication.
