Abstract

                   This study, titled The Study of Audio Description Guidelines in Television for Visually Impaired People, explored information related to audio description from both Thai and foreign organizations in order to ascertain appropriate principles of audio description. The data was divided into four groups: information from regulators, production units, visual impairment organizations and education organizations. Data from foreign sources were examined by a document analysis technique, while in-depth interviews and an observation were used to derive information from Thai sectors. The research questioned fivetopics: the principles of audio description production, languages, information selection, voicing, and television genres and audio description.
                  The study found that audio description is the service of describing images in television to give audiences the comprehension and enjoyment of the program. The primary audiences who beneft from audio description are the blinds and partly sighted people and the secondary audiences are elderly, children and people who need audio description as language learning tools. The secondary groups might be sighted people.
                 The study found two guidelines of audio description scripting. The firstguideline is an objective description: telling what a describer sees without summarizing and interpreting. The second one allows summarizing, interpreting, and necessary additional explanation, if it can enhance the comprehension and enjoyment of audience. Both guidelines could be applied to audio description production, depending on purposes and genres of the program. Some genres need audio description as they are full of images and codes, such as series, soap operas, movies on television, and documentaries. Some genres have less need for audio descriptions as the conversation and sound could help audience comprehend the content enough, such as news, talks, and game shows.
                 Foreign practical guidelines, including the process of audio de-scription production, information selection and voicing, could be applied in Thailand. However, Language practical guidelines from foreign language could not be all-used in the Thai context of cultural differentiation. The study might be applied for further studies as the guideline to understand the core concepts related to audio description such as the benefitto audiences, message selection, languages and genres.
