Abstract

                   This research project aims to explore the needs and preferences on audio description among Thai people with visual impairment and to examine factors which affect the differing needs for audio description.
                   Data were collected from a total sample of 27 volunteers with visual impairment, divided into three groups: respondents with congenital blindness; adventitious blindness; and low vision by a group interview and focus group discussions. Each group with different age and gender watched 14 television clips with audio description from the first-yearaudio description project (A-roy Yang Ying and Kin You Kue television programmes) and expressed their opinion afterward. After receiving the information, the author created a draft of audio description guidelines and then cross-checked the information given by conducting in-depth interviews with six respondents purposively selected from the focus group discussions.
                   The results showed that people with visual impairment need every television genre to be audio described. Regarding the content, the audio description should describe facial expressions and appearance of characters, settings, colour, title and end credits, details of objects on screen, sound effects which are difficultto guess, directions, and quantity. All texts on screen and subtitle should be read out.
                    With regard to audio description presentation, respondents need audio description which does not describe in every sound gap or on dialogue; has a good quality of sound; use grammatically correct language; describe with clear voice, easy-to-follow pace; and use the describing tone in consistence with the nature of the programme, but not interpret or summarise the content. However, in some television genres, such as a cooking show and a travel programme, interpreting or summarizing content in a positive way is acceptable.
                    Age and age of vision loss, types and degree of visual impairment, taste and lifestyle, personal experiences, and education are factors which affect the differing needs for audio description.
