Abstract

                    This study explores the narrative structure and meaning construction of folk media in Thai films. The textual analysis of Thai films in which folk media were portrayed found that: (1) the narration of folk media in Thai films was ended up with a tragedy; (2) the narration reflected a patriarchal power of middle-class men; (3) in addition to serving as constructing a confidence of self-identity, the flashback narration also responded to a nostalgic sensation among film producers and audiences; (4) myths were constructed through Thai films that folk media, as a part of Thai culture, were required to be regulated, controlled, and monitored by the Thai state; (5) the narration of folk media in Thai films was portrayed in ways to suppress local community’s capacity in negotiating with and resisting against dominant economic and political powers and; (6) Thai films constructed the myth of “Thai culture”.
