Abstract

This article concentrates on the study of story telling in the art of Tableau Staged Photography. The aim is to make an understanding of its characteristic and how to visually deliver narrative content through this form of still photograph, which has not been studied much in Thailand. Although Tableau Staged Photography was found since the early time in photographic history, but it has found favor with photographers who want to tell stories in an innovative and creative way only in contemporary photography from the 1970’s. This article reveals that a constructed meaning in narrative form is the key to this area of photographic practice. It focuses on giving viewers the experience of “reading” and images, rather than merely looking at. The method used to create the work was interdisciplinary. The study shows that influences and inspira-tions came mainly from painting, theater and cinema, however acted merely as reference points that help artists and photographers to carry out their experiment in photography. With the use of photograph as a mean to create such work, viewers can still make connection with the collective realities from the life like elements in image frame. They can read the constructed narration of contemporary fiction that artists create from contemporary reality. Narrative is loaded into a single pho-tograph. A combination of characters and props are carefully staged, choreographed, and arranged in the scene to create an effective way of creating narrative content in a stand-alone photograph.
