Abstract

An article entitled “An Evaluation on a Process of Making an Activity to Create Knowledge and Understanding, Attitude, and Communication Skills about Sex between Parents and Teenage Kids” is developed from a research named An Evaluation on a Process of an Activity to Create Knowledge and Understanding, Attitude, and Communication Skill about Sex between Parents and Teenage Kids Project, supporting by Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth). The research project as well as the article is objectively aimed to study a process of making an activity of alliances in three areas in order to build up knowledge, attitudes and communication skills about sex for parents to their kids; as well as to evaluate the activity result. The three studied areas, which were organized by ThaiHealth, are Phrao District, Chiang Mai Province; Chiang-Kham District, Phayao Province; and Nongyaplong District, Petchaburi Province. The workshop is supposed to encourage parents to talk about sex with their teenage kids causing the decline in non-ready pregnancy problem.
The evaluation methodology relies on field observation and  in-depth interviews of facilitators. Perhaps, the process of an activity along with the pre-evaluation and post-evaluation for the parents who attended the workshop can be concluded as of the followings:
                 1. Regarding an interview with facilitators, it showed they had an experience in sex working as well as being workshop moderator. The workshop is emphasized on an activity rather than a lecture as well as is designed to train or meet the participants more than one times, expecting to change behaviour. The suggestion to prevent the pregnancy in teenagers was to improve moderator of the process. To some extent, the parents curriculum development was supported by a clear policy, budget, and a cooperation working plan between each department as well as constructing a campaign about sex though huge media channels.
                  2. According to an observation, an overall activity contained knowledge content, attitude changing, and communication skill knowledge. In this regards, two areas used a curriculum from Path2Health Foundation while the other area depended on a manual namely, (Brave), Talk to Your Kids about sex by ThaiHealth. The process of the workshop should have been a learning process through activity and roleplay which was better than listening and discussing. In addition, there should have been people from different ages and should have been divided into small groups. Hence, these groups should have been continually meet.
                  3. As a result of the evaluation forms, it turned out the workshop made few difference of the parents’ attitude towards their kids comparing to before attending the workshop. It means that the parents still wanted their kids to listen to what they said and did not have a relationship during their study, for example. Otherwise, the level of understanding about sex in Phrao, Chiang-Mai was obviously higher, whereas the other two areas remained almost the same. In term of communication skill, the parents in three areas developed a better skill in communicating with their kids. Nonetheless, the communication skill about sex was not much improved.
The study represented that the workshop generated a change in knowledge level, attitudes, and performances of the parents at certain point, however, it did not fully inspire the parents to talk with their kids in an in-depth level since the workshop did not really improve parents’ attitude; for instance, attitudes about sex and attitudes towards teenagers. Conclusively, the recommendation is to use any kind of media in adjusting society’s attitude about sex as well as develop more efficient workshop curriculum.
