The Related Concepts of Audio Description for Television

The main point of this investigation is to state the importance of audio description for television, and to pinpoint the situation of audio description as a television access service in the Thai context. Moreover, this article demonstrates the 4 related concepts of audio description for television which support audio describers to produce the effective audio description as follows. (1) The cognitive approach for audio description which is a method to classify the categories of audio description study into 3 ways which are the production perspective, the reception perspective and the meeting of minds perspective. (2) The concept of objectivity and subjectivity in audio description which is the critical dilemma in audio description area. This part shows the benefits and limitation of both objectivity and subjectivity approaches. (3) The concept of sound design for audio description. This concept will benefit for balancing the original sound of audio-visual products, such as music and sound effects, and audio description as the additional service. (4) The concept of the functional discourse strategy supports the successful selectivity of audio describing which is discourse-supporting, discourse-filling and discourse-contrasting.
