The Sweet Dream on the Sand: Sexual Desire of the Female Protagonists in the Romance Novel Series, The Sheik’s Sweetheart

This article focuses on analyzing the desert setting as a site of the female protagonist’s sexual desire in the romance novel series, The Sheik’s Sweetheart. It was found that the texts present Thai female protagonists traveling to a desert in search of experiences that cannot be found in their homeland. The Stories present erotic scenes in the form of a romance novel, focusing on the relationship of the female protagonists and the sheik. The main setting is the desert that is presented in two forms: the city with the original civilization and the modern city. The representations of the two forms make ambiguous space. As a result, the representations led to attraction and seduction that are consistent with the character of the sheik, a Middle Eastern man who is masculine and sexually attractive. The mentioned presentations are the sexualized Middle Eastern place and race to present the sexual desire of female protagonists. The story describes that tourism in a capitalist context involves commodifying the desert as the dream of happiness that obsesses the mind and the body of the female protagonists through the appetite for Middle Eastern foods. Thus, the desert setting is the space to release the sexual desire of the female protagonists under the power of consumerism through the dream of sexual fantasy.
