Abstract

The purposes of this research were: 1) to compare the English spelling ability of Grade 1 students before and after learning through Synthetic Phonics combined with Decodable Texts, and 2) to study the satisfaction of Grade 1 students regarding instruction using Synthetic Phonics combined with decodable texts to enhance English word spelling skills. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The target group consisted of 34 Grade 1 students selected through purposive sampling. The research instruments included: 1) five lesson plans based on Synthetic Phonics combined with Decodable Texts, which were validated by three experts and yielded Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) values ranging from 0.67 to 1.00; 2) an English spelling test, which demonstrated IOC values ranging from 0.67 to 1.00 and a reliability coefficient of 0.98; and 3) a student satisfaction questionnaire toward the learning management approach, which was validated by three experts and yielded IOC values ranging from 0.67 to 1.00 for all items. The data were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, paired-samples t-test, and content analysis. The research results found that 1) the students’ English spelling ability after learning through Synthetic Phonics integrated with Decodable Texts was significantly higher than before learning (t = 5.92, p < .001) 2) the students reported a high level of satisfaction with the learning management using Synthetic Phonics integrated with Decodable Texts to enhance English spelling skills (M = 2.72, SD = 0.49).
