Thailand – Uzbekistan Relations: The Past Three Decades and Opportunities Ahead

Abstract
The objective of this research is to study Uzbekistan's foreign policy, Thai-Uzbekistan relations during the past three decades in political, economic and social dimensions, and to study opportunities for the development of sustainable relationships between Thailand and Uzbekistan. A method of conducting research is qualitative by document analysis technique on resources from primary and secondary documents and in-depth interviews. The results showed that Uzbekistan is in the process of reforming the country with liberal economic policies and democratic governance. Uzbekistan has a comprehensively balanced foreign policy, holding pragmatism principles of multilateralism and pro-active foreign policy. The value of bilateral trade between Thailand and Uzbekistan is still relatively small. The main barriers to trade are a lack of information on trade and investment, unknown, and high transportation costs as Uzbekistan is a landlocked country. Thailand and Uzbekistan have the potential to develop a comprehensive relationship resulted from the country's central location in Central Asia, it is the most populous country, the majority of the population is Muslim and a new market with political stability. Due to transportation limitations, a country is more suitable for investment than exportation. Business opportunities for Thai investors include energy, steel, gold, cotton, tourism, food and agricultural product processing, textiles, hotel, and halal.
