“Being more than a King”: A study of conceptual metaphors and Thai perspectives of King Rama IX

Abstract
This research was conducted in order to honor His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej and disseminate knowledge on conceptual metaphor analysis and present it as an act of charity to His Majesty the late King Rama IX. This study examines metaphors used by Thais when referring to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on the internet, in printed matter, and on billboards, based on the conceptual metaphor theory. The results revealed many metaphorical expressions that are words and phrases from nine different domains. They were systematically and ubiquitously used by different groups of Thai people and could reflect nine different conceptual metaphors: 1) "King Rama IX is a god", 2) "King Rama IX is a father", 3) "King Rama IX is a shelter", 4) "King Rama IX is rain", 5) King Rama IX is a luminary", 6) "King Rama IX is a teacher", 7) "King Rama IX is a pillar", 8) "King Rama IX is a force", and 9) "King Rama IX is a craftsman.’ These conceptual metaphors help us to better understand the meaning of the phrase, “being more than a King”.
