Appreciations in “PETCH PRA UMA”:A Study of Generic Structure and Socio-cultural Aspects

Abstract
The objectives of this article are to study the generic structure of the appreciations in the novel PETCH PRA UMA using move analysis, and the socio-cultural aspects found in the appreciations. The data were collected from 47 appreciations from 48 books of PETCH PRA UMA printed by NA BAANWANNAGUM PUBLISHING in 2001. The result shows five moves: announcing move, appreciation move, thanking move, blessing move, and persuasion move. The announcing move and appreciation move are conventional moves whereas the thanking move, blessing move, and persuasion move are specific to the context. Regarding socio-cultural aspects, the appreciations reveal some Thai cultural norms such as appreciation and blessing behavior and thanking behavior in Thai society.
