Compound and Complex Sentences in Thai Academic, Political, Legal and Media Registers

Abstract
This study analyzes compound and complex sentences in Thai academic, political, legal, and media registers. Data for the academic register were collected from articles in medical and public health journals. Those for political register were gathered from statements of politicians from both opposition and government parties. Data for the legal register were taken from laws concerning land use and amendments to the Land Act. The data for the media register were gathered from advertisements on the internet and women’s magazines. The length of each set of data is 2,000 words. The results show that conjunctions are markers of compound sentences and complex sentences; for example, / // / /are used in compound sentences. Complement clauses are marked by// //. Relative clauses are marked by // / / // whereas time adverbial clauses are marked by prepositions indicating time, such as // // //
//. Causal adverbial clauses are marked by //, //. Goal adverbial clauses are preceded by //. Result adverbial clauses are preceded by //, //. Conditional adverbial clauses are preceded by //, //. Contradiction adverbial clauses are marked by a //, //. Quantitive analysis shows that the proportion of compound and complex sentences found in most texts is around 86-91 percent, except the media register, in which compound and complex sentences can account for 67 percent.
There are high proportions of adverbial clauses in almost all registers except academic where relative clauses are equally used. Moreover, conjunction and complex sentence markers are highly used in all registers. It shows us that syntactic connectivity is explicit.
