“Crossing Linguistic, Cultural, and Digital Borders: Reflections from Contemporary Humanities” In a world that continues to confront constant fluctuations—whether technological, social, cultural, or political—the importance of the humanities and social sciences has not diminished. Instead, it has become increasingly essential for deepening our understanding of “humanity” in all its dimensions. Journal of Man and Society, Volume 11, Issue 1, serves as a platform that opens space for new intellectual voices to transcend boundaries of language and discourse, linking diverse human experiences.
In this issue, readers will encounter articles addressing contemporary themes, such as the critical discourse analysis of media narratives surrounding the Johnny Depp–Amber Heard case (A Critical Discourse Analysis of News Headlines: The Case of Lawsuits Between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard), the shifting epistemologies reflected in modern Burmese travel literature (Relocating to A Landscape of Knowledge: An Origin of Modern Myanmar Travel Writings), and the fan culture of Thai Boys’ Love (BL) series in Vietnam and China, which illustrate the dynamics of identity, gender, and transnationalism in the digital era (The Culture of Thai Boys’ Love Series Fans in Vietnam and The Reception of Thai Boys’ Love Series and Behavioral Trends Among Chinese Fans in Guangdong Province). The issue also includes studies examining feminist perspectives in molam performances (Agency Beyond Boundaries in Molam Narrative Singing) and the reconstruction of women’s roles in Chinese goddess mythology (‘Life’ and ‘Journey’ of Chinese Goddesses: A Mythological Study Along Heroine’s Journey Framework).
These articles do more than present data or facts; they reveal new possibilities for questioning long-standing worldviews through diverse critical and methodological lenses—including discourse analysis, historical inquiry, phenomenology, and ethnography.
Notably, this issue reflects the growing trend among emerging scholars who engage with contemporary topics and creatively integrate interdisciplinary approaches—whether through the use of YouTube as a site for exploring digital identity (Content Production Strategies Affecting Subscriber Growth on YouTube) or investigations into inequalities faced by persons with disabilities during the COVID-19 crisis through human-rights perspectives (Inequality in Social Participation of Persons with Disabilities During the COVID-19 Outbreak in the Philippines).
The Editorial Board hopes that this issue will serve as a space for intellectual exchange, amplify social voices, and inspire the creation of knowledge that resonates with the dynamics of today’s world. We invite scholars, students, and the broader public to continue advancing the conversations between “humans and society” in ways that are creative, sustainable, and ever-evolving.
