Abstract

                   The article titled "Lampang local newspapers and their roles in promoting environment" is resulting from a research of the same subject. The research aims at studying news' reporting including news photos of different local newspapers in Lampang which is one of the provinces with strong presence of local newspapers in Thailand. The study explores how the environmental issues are reported in news and news photos by applying a concept of media's roles in producing news related to environment.
                    The research's methodology is to study the four highest circulated local newspapers in Lampang which are the Kon Muang Neua (published weekly, focus on criminal news), the Mang Moom (published weekly, focus on criminal news) the Lanna Post (published weekly, focus on economic, political, social and criminal news) and the Lampang News (published biweekly, focus on criminal news) published during January to June 2016, totally six months. The study reviewed all published news and news photos in all pages if there were news related to environment or not, at which amount and categories covered. The analysis is in pieces and square inch.
                     The study reveals that all the four newspapers reporting on environmental news, calculating at 13.60% of all news' coverage, while presentation of non-environmental news was 86.40%. Among the environmental news reported, 66.70% of the news published on the front page.
                     The four local newspaper of Lampang reported on environmental news Category 1 (Disturbance of the environment) the most, at 43.99% of total news' coverage, and was followed by Category 4 (Solving environmental related problems) at 23.06%, Category 2 (Imbalance of biodiversity system) at 21.22%, and Category 3 (Conflictsin natural resources' management) at 11.73% respectively.
                      The Lanna Post had given highest priority in reporting news and news photos concerning environment when compared to other local newspapers, with high ratio of news coverage and higher degree in producing news and news photos with different categories of environ-mental news. Additionally, efforts were made in publishing environmental news and news photos on the front page as opposed to the insidepage, making it the highest among other newspapers. This is a result of the Lanna Post's policy in not focusing only on reporting the criminal news while other well-known local newspapers tend to emphasize only on criminal news. Importantly, this indicates as well that the readers of local newspaper in Lampang are interested in reading news related to environment.
