THE DEVELOPMENT OF CONTEXTUAL CLUES STRATEGIES EXERCISES TO ENHANCE KNOWLEDGE OF ENGLISH VOCABULARY FOR 12TH GRADE STUDENTS

Abstract

         The purposes of this research were 1) to develop and test the efficiency of exercises enhancing English vocabulary knowledge of 12th grade students using contextual clues strategies 2) to study the result of the use of contextual clues exercises of 12th grade students. 3) to compare scores of vocabulary knowledge before and after using contextual clues strategies exercises. The sample were 36 students in Matthayomsuksa 6.3 (12th grade) in academic year of 2020 (12th grade) during 2nd semester in Buddhacinnarajpittaya school selected by using cluster random sampling technique. Students were asked to study 4 strategies of contextual clues along with doing 12 contextual clues strategies exercises which consists of Definition Clues, Synonym and Restatement Clues, Antonym and Contrast Clues, and Example Clues. The duration of this research was 14 classes session. Paired sample t-test was used to analyze the English vocabulary score of students. Mean score and S.D. were analyzed to indicate the efficiency of contextual clues exercises enhancing English vocabulary knowledge and the use of contextual clues strategies exercises.


The result of this research found that


1) The efficiency of the contextual clues strategies exercises for 12th grade students was at 77.80/79.31 which was higher than the expected criterion of 75/75.  2) Mean scores of contextual clues strategies exercise from the highest to the lowest score were Example clues, Antonym and contrast clues, Synonym and restatement clues and Example clues respectively. 3) The posttest scores of vocabulary knowledge after using the contextual clues strategies exercises were significantly increasing compared to pretest scores at the statistic level of .05.
