Enhancing Thai EFL Students’ Reading Literacy through the CIRCLE Model and Global Citizenship Education
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of the CIRCLE model in enhancing English reading skills of Thai students learning English as a foreign language, integrating the concept of global citizenship. The participants consisted of 42 Grade 8 students. The research employed a One-Group Pretest-Posttest design to assess reading skills before and after the learning activities, and data were analyzed using Paired-Samples t-Test. The results indicated that students’ reading skills had improved significantly after the intervention (t=5.02, df=5, p=0.004). Notably, skills in language use and deep reading increased from M=1.76, S.D.=0.50 to M=2.87, S.D.=0.67, while participation in learning activities rose from M=1.01, S.D.=0.43 to M=2.78, S.D.=0.65. Critical thinking and reasoning skills also showed considerable improvement, with scores increasing from M=2.09, S.D.=0.51 to M=2.49, S.D.=0.63, demonstrating that students could analyze content and support their opinions more effectively. These findings suggest that the CIRCLE model is effective in developing reading skills, critical thinking, and the ability to connect content with social and global contexts. Integrating the concept of global citizenship facilitated students’ meaningful engagement, allowing them to exchange ideas and participate actively in reading activities.
