General Education Subject: Roles in and Challenges of Learning and Teaching Management in the 21st Century

Abstract
In the current context of the Thai society entering the 21st century, rapid advances in media technology and swiftly changing social trends have significantly impacted the management and delivery of general education courses. This article aims to highlight the evolving role and importance of general education curricula from the past to the present. It considers the development of educational concepts up to the contemporary era, with particular focus on the critical turning point brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation presented new roles and challenges for higher education institutions to develop general education curricula that meet the needs of students, educational institutions, society, and the nation, amid the changes and upheavals of social trends. The study topic was analyzed by SWOT and five key dimensions were identified for considering the future development of general education courses in teaching and learning, as follows: 1) Diversity of Learners; 2) Technological Changes; 3) Adaptability of Teachers; 4) Community Integration; and 5) Administrative Management.
