A Study of Statistical Reasoning Competency Through Problem Solving Approach in Real-world Situation of First-year Undergraduate Students

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to assess undergraduates’ ability and behavior in statistical reasoning through a problem-solving approach in real-world situations. The participants were 30 first-year students enrolled in the Statistics for Biological Science course during the second semester of the 2023 academic year. Purposive sampling was employed, and four students were selected as target participants for an in-depth case study. The research instruments included (1) a test of statistical reasoning ability, (2) an observation form for statistical reasoning behavior, and (3) an interview form for statistical reasoning behavior. Quantitative data were analyzed using the binomial test, while qualitative data were analyzed through written work analysis. The research findings indicated that the first-year students demonstrated statistical reasoning ability, with more than 60 percent achieving at least 60 percent of the total score at the .05 level of significance. Moreover, the students showed improvement in their statistical reasoning behavior, particularly in understanding statistical data, selecting appropriate problem-solving methods in terms of planning, applying inferential statistics correctly, and accurately summarizing and explaining conclusions to given problem situations.
