Abstract

The purpose of this research was to compare the reading comprehension abilities of upper secondary students before and after receiving reading instruction based on Project-Based Inquiry and Disciplinary Literacy. The study utilized  a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 30 Grade 11 students from a school under the Department of Education, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. The experiment was conducted over a duration of 10 class periods. The research instruments included: 1) a reading comprehension test administered before and after the intervention, and 2) reading lesson plans based on Project-Based Inquiry and Disciplinary Literacy, comprising 2 learning units of 5 class periods each, for a total of 10 periods. The data were analyzed by using mean, standard deviation, and dependent samples t-test. The findings revealed that the students' post-test reading comprehension mean score (M = 31.77, SD = 4.02) was significantly higher than their pre-test mean score (M = 24.17, SD = 5.78) at the .05 level of statistical significance (t = 9.69). This indicates that the instructional approach encouraged learners to construct their own knowledge through systematic inquiry, enabling them to analyze literature in depth similarly to disciplinary experts, as well as synthesize knowledge and create products utilizing higher-order thinking processes. Consequently, their reading comprehension ability was clearly enhanced.
