Buddhism and The Creation of Peace in A Multicultural Society
Abstract
This academic article aims to examine Buddhist principles that can be applied to promote peace in a multicultural society. The study found that the Six Principles of Cordiality (Sāraṇīyadhamma 6) and the Four Bases of Social Solidarity (Saṅgahavatthu 4) are key Buddhist teachings that contribute to peaceful coexistence. The Six Principles of Cordiality—loving-kindness in bodily action, speech, and thought, sharing of resources, common moral conduct, and harmony of views-foster love, unity, mutual understanding, and harmonious living among members of society. The Four Bases of Social Solidarity—generosity, kindly speech, beneficial conduct, and impartiality- encourage compassion, courteous communication, service to the common good, and equitable treatment of others. These principles help reduce prejudice, conflict, and social division while promoting social harmony in multicultural communities. The study further reveals that Buddhism recognizes the reality of multicultural societies, which are characterized by diversity in ethnicity, religion, language, and culture. While such diversity enriches society, it may also lead to conflict if mutual understanding and acceptance are lacking. In response, Buddhism proposes the Six Principles of Cordiality and the Four Bases of Social Solidarity as practical guidelines for cultivating loving-kindness, generosity, constructive communication, resource sharing, and equality in human relationships. These principles help minimize prejudice, mistrust, and conflict while strengthening mutual understanding, trust, and reconciliation among people from different cultural backgrounds. Consequently, they provide an effective foundation for peaceful coexistence and sustainable peace in contemporary multicultural societies.
