A Survey of Guitar Teaching Methods for First-Year Music Performance Students at Three Universities in Sichuan Province

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to systematically investigate the current status, characteristics, advantages, and challenges of guitar teaching methods for first-year music performance majors in three universities in Sichuan Province, China—Sichuan Conservatory of Music, Sichuan University of Culture and Arts, and Sichuan University of Science & Engineering. By exploring the curriculum design, teaching methods, teaching media, classroom environment, evaluation systems, teaching activities, and student participation in guitar teaching of these institutions, this study aims to provide theoretical support and practical reference for the reform and innovation of university guitar teaching. This study adopts a qualitative research method, collecting data through semi-structured interviews with six key informants (professors with rich teaching experience and professional backgrounds) and on-site classroom observations. The research duration is from April to December 2025, covering the core content of guitar teaching for first-year students. The research results show that the three universities have formed distinct guitar teaching systems based on their own school-running characteristics: Sichuan Conservatory of Music focuses on professional depth and stylistic innovation, Sichuan University of Culture and Arts emphasizes the standardization of basic skills and the integration of theory and practice, and Sichuan University of Science & Engineering highlights applied skills and collaborative practice. All three universities have achieved certain results in curriculum construction, teaching method innovation, and teaching resource integration, but they also face challenges such as insufficient personalized teaching, uneven development of digital teaching resources, and the need to strengthen the integration of regional cultural characteristics. This study enriches the empirical research on guitar teaching in regional universities in China and provides targeted optimization suggestions for improving the quality of guitar talent training in higher education institutions.
