Abstract

        The research title "A Comparative Study of Moksha in Upanisad Propitiatory and Nibbana in Buddhadasa Bhikkhu’s Views” has 3 objectives; 1) to study Moksha in the Upanisad philosophy, 2) to study Nibbana in the view of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu and 3) to comparing study of Moksha in Upanisad philosophy and Nibbana in the view of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu. This research studies of Tripitaka, Buddhist texts, academic documents and involving research. Those data are analyzed by descriptive method. The research’s result shown that 1. Moksha in Upanisad philosophy meant liberation from suffering in the cycle of life or cycle of birth and death. It united with Brahman, which was the ultimate ideology of Moksha philosophy. The practical way to reach Moksha in Upanisad philosophy would follow 3 Yogas; Karma Yoga, Gnaya Yoka and Bhakti Yoka. 2. Nibbana in the view of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu meant calmness. Our mind liberated from lust, anger and delusion. Sometimes, this condition called emptiness, which our mind was free from defilement, so our mind was emptiness or experienced Nibbana. The practical way to reach Nibbana would follow 2 meditations; practice meditation followed natural way and practice meditation followed particular form.     3. The similarity and difference between Moksha in Upanisad philosophy and Nibbana in the view of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu could conclude into 3 points: 1) the meaning of the Moksha in Upanisad philosophy and Nibbana in the view of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu were the same, namely, liberation from suffering, 2) the type of Moksha in Upanisad philosophy and Nibbana in the view of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu were the same, namely, the way to reach ultimate goal using wisdom, and 3) the practical methods to reach Moksha in Upanisad philosophy and Nibbana in the view of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu were deferent. Upanisad philosophy focused on following Yoga way, but Buddhadasa Bhikkhu’s view was follow meditation.
