BRAIN FUNCTION AND BUDDHIST MECHANISMS: AN INTEGRATIVE APPROACH TO HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Keywords:
Human Development, Buddhist Integration, Neuroscience, Buddhist DoctrinesAbstract
This article investigates the interplay between brain function and Buddhist principles with three objectives: (1) to elucidate the epistemic gap between abstract Buddhist doctrines and concrete neuroscientific evidence, (2) to examine Buddhist mechanisms that correspond to specific brain regions, and (3) to propose an integrative framework for human development. The study employs a documentary research approach, analyzing and synthesizing data from canonical Buddhist texts and relevant neuroscientific research. The findings indicate that epistemic gaps are not obstacles but opportunities for integration, particularly in addressing the challenges of interpreting the Threefold Training (Sīla, Samādhi, Paññā) in practical application. Ignorance (Avijjā) contributes to heightened limbic responses to stimuli, fostering defilements (Kilesa) and leading to deviant behaviors. Conversely, wisdom (Paññā) can be explained through the enhanced function of the prefrontal cortex, which regulates and inhibits emotional impulses. Moreover, mindfulness (sati) and concentration (Aamādhi), grounded in Buddhist practice, exert direct effects on rebalancing neural circuits and fostering positive connectivity. This article is structured progressively: (1) identifying epistemic gaps, (2) examining integrative mechanisms, and (3) proposing holistic strategies for human development. By grounding ethical cultivation in Buddhist principles and elucidating physical transformations through neuroscience, the study offers a sustainable development model that addresses contemporary challenges, fostering both mental balance and wisdom.
