Mathematics Board Game Design: The 'Fraction' Board Game for Grade 3 Students

Abstract

This study aimed to design and evaluate the appropriateness of a mathematics board game titled “Fractions” for Grade 3 students. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, consisting of several key steps: reviewing relevant literature, designing the game, conducting expert consultations, and evaluating the suitability of the board game by experts. The instrument used for evaluating the game’s appropriateness was the Educational Board Game Appropriateness Assessment Form, which comprised six components.

The results revealed that the “Fractions” board game consisted of four main components: game information, rules, bingo sheets, and fraction reading cards. The research followed a mixed-methods process by collecting feedback from experts and revising the game based on their recommendations. After the revisions, the experts reassessed the game and found that it achieved a very high level of appropriateness (M = 4.50, SD = 0.77), particularly in aspects of fun and engagement, communication, and collaboration. These findings reflect the potential of the learning medium to foster analytical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. This study highlights the importance of instructional media design that aligns with learners’ needs and developmental stages, and it further recommends expanding the use of this game to other grade levels or mathematical topics in the future.
