THE DEVELOPMENT OF READING COMPREHENSION SKILLS USING COOPERATIVE LEARNING THROUGH THE CIRC TECHNIQUE WITH SKILL EXERCISES FOR GRADE 5 STUDENTS

Abstract

The purposes of this research were: 1) to examine the efficiency of developing reading comprehension skills through cooperative learning using the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) technique combined with skill exercises based on the 80/80 criterion; 2) to compare the reading comprehension skills of Grade 5 students before and after learning through CIRC learning management combined with skill exercises; and 3) to study students’ satisfaction toward the cooperative learning approach using the CIRC technique with skill exercises.  The sample consisted of 20 Grade 5 students studying in the second semester of the 2025 academic year at Ban Phueng School, selected through cluster random sampling. The research instruments included 10 lesson plans, reading comprehension skill exercises, a 30-item multiple-choice achievement test, and a 15-item satisfaction questionnaire. The data were analyzed using percentage, mean, standard deviation, and a Dependent Samples t-test

The results of the study were as follows:

1. The efficiency of the instructional approach was 86.58/85.67, which was higher than the established criterion of 80/80.
2. The students’ post-learning achievement scores were significantly higher than their pre-learning achievement scores at the .05 level.
3. The students’ satisfaction with the instructional approach was at a high level (M = 3.92, S.D. = 0.83).
