The Narrative Strategy of Stories About the Law of Karma and Folk Tales by Ajarn Yod Preecha Ruangdej via Online Media

Abstract

This research article aims to (1) study the narrative strategies used in stories about the law of karma and folk tales by Ajarn Yod Preecha Ruangdej via online media, (2) examine the moral teachings present in Ajarn Yod Preecha Ruangdej’s narratives of karma and folk tales, and (3) explore ways to apply this knowledge in Thai language learning and teaching. This study adopts a qualitative research methodology, analyzing 50 episodes from Ruang Lao Chao Baan (Folk Tales) by Ajarn Yod, which were broadcast on YouTube between July 2022 and March 2023. The findings reveal that (1) among the 50 analyzed stories, narration was the most commonly used storytelling technique, accounting for 34%. (2) In terms of thematic content, Buddhist concepts related to the law of karma were the most prominent, appearing in 58% of the narratives. (3) Ajarn Yod Preecha Ruangdej demonstrates remarkable storytelling skills, effectively conveying messages with clarity. He employs symbolic techniques such as sound effects and gestures, uses informal yet accessible language, and communicates directly with his audience. His distinctive voice, storytelling method, and careful selection of stories contribute to his unique style. His narratives particularly emphasize the law of karma, illustrating the principle of "good deeds yield good results, while bad deeds lead to negative consequences." Additionally, he skillfully incorporates vivid language and thought-provoking moral lessons, making his stories both engaging and educational.
