Effects of Using the SQ5R Method on the Critical Reading Ability of Fifth Year Secondary School Students

This study aimed to (1) compare the critical reading ability of fifth year secondary school students before and after instruction using the SQ5R teaching method, and (2) compare their post-instruction critical reading ability with a specified criterion. The sample consisted of 36 students from Class 5/10 at Surasakmontree School, Bangkok, enrolled in the second semester of the 2024 academic year, selected through cluster random sampling. The research instruments included five SQ5R-based critical reading lesson plans and a 30-item critical reading ability test. Data were analyzed using mean (M), standard deviation (SD), and a dependent samples t-test. The results showed that the students' critical reading ability significantly improved after instruction with the SQ5R method (p < .05), and their post-instruction scores were significantly higher than the established criterion (p < .05).
