Developing Reading Comprehension Skills through the Panorama Teaching Method Integrated with Buddhist Teaching Principles for Grade 6 Students at Wat Chakkawat School, Bangkok

Abstract

This research aimed to: (1) develop a learning management plan for reading comprehension using the Panorama teaching method integrated with Buddhist teaching principles to achieve the efficiency criterion of 80/80; (2) compare students’ reading comprehension achievement before and after learning through the developed instructional plan; and (3) assess students’ satisfaction with the learning management plan. The research instruments consisted of: (1) a learning management plan for reading comprehension based on the Panorama teaching method integrated with Buddhist teaching principles; (2) a reading comprehension achievement test; and (3) a student satisfaction questionnaire. The sample comprised 24 Grade 6 students from Wat Chakrawat School, Bangkok, Thailand. Data were analyzed using the mean (X̄), standard deviation (S.D.), and the dependent-samples t-test. The findings revealed that: (1) the learning management plan achieved a process efficiency (E₁) of 82.80 and an outcome efficiency (E₂) of 84.31, indicating that the instructional plan exceeded the prescribed 80/80 efficiency criterion; (2) the students’ mean pre-test score was 14.54 (S.D. = 2.84), while the mean post-test score increased to 25.29 (S.D. = 3.26). The post-test achievement was significantly higher than the pre-test achievement at the .05 level of statistical significance; and (3) the students’ overall satisfaction with the learning management plan was at a high level (X̄ = 4.23). When considered by aspect, the highest level of satisfaction was found in content (X̄ = 4.41), followed by instructional activities (X̄ = 4.31), instructional media and learning materials (X̄ = 4.28), and measurement and evaluation (X̄ = 4.20), all of which were rated at a high level.
